《吉祥如 ช》
Auspicious as ช
作品《(空白)053.v2(Error)》即源自此一經驗。

Auspicious as ช
Auspicious as“ช”, not “as one wishes.”
This residency presentation unfolds from moments of linguistic misalignment and semantic slippage, taking an unreadable or only partially legible glyph as a point of departure for looking and thinking. Such shifts in language and meaning respond to the artist’s repeated experience of incomplete understanding while engaging with the highly symbolized systems of folk belief and prosperity culture encountered during the residency in Thailand.
“吉祥如意” is traditionally a blessing that expresses wishes for smoothness, fulfillment, and good fortune. However, when the final character “意” is replaced by the Thai letter “ช”, the phrase is abruptly severed from its meaning, and the auspicious intent it once carried collapses. This act of substitution produces a rupture in language that mirrors the experience of being a foreigner situated within an unfamiliar cultural and linguistic system—where understanding rarely arrives fully formed, but must instead be gradually assembled through translation, conjecture, and repeated comparison.
The work (blank) 053.v2 (Error) emerges directly from this experience. While using Google Lens to translate the Chinese character “吉” into Thai, Huang Shun-Ting encountered a misrecognition generated by the system, which identified the character as an inverted Thai letter “ช”. This letter does not constitute a word, nor can it carry the blessing, symbolic resonance, or cultural weight embedded in the original character.
It is precisely within this misalignment that the work generates a condition closely aligned with lived experience. When immersed in an environment where language and culture have yet to become familiar, perception often operates as if filtered—at times allowing comprehension, at times only partial intuition, and more often settling into a state in which you think you know, but do not truly understand. In this context, the residual symbols, sounds, and letterforms left behind through repeated translation and substitution become experiential markers of interpretive failure and perceptual drift encountered during the artist’s process of working across locations.
